The deal is over

The old plan was to study once, get a job, and wait for years of stability. Now it works for fewer and fewer people. A reflection about creating value in a world that has already changed.

I have been thinking about this a lot lately. Part of the reason is that I started talking about it with my children, and I noticed that they feel a little lost. Not because they lack anything. They feel lost because some of the places that prepare them still use an old plan, and others have already changed. That difference is confusing. One place says one thing, the other says the opposite, and nobody explains that the ground has changed.

The old plan was simple. Study once, get a good job, be loyal, move up slowly, wait for years of stability. It worked for a long time. But now it works for fewer and fewer people.

Artificial intelligence will not make jobs disappear overnight. What it does is more quiet. A big part of the tasks that people do every day is already being replaced. It happens quietly, without big news and without a lot of people losing their jobs at the same time. Whole professions are slowly getting smaller. What used to need five people, one person can do today. And this is not a prediction. It is happening now.

I say this from the inside, without anger. I have been on the side that makes these decisions for a long time. A company does not exist to protect anyone's income. It exists to be efficient. When technology makes it possible for one person to do what used to need many, it will be done. Not because it is cruel, but because it is logical. The one who does not do it loses to the one who does. Many businesses are changing a lot. Some examples are shops, travel agencies, and communication companies. They are disappearing in the form they had decades ago. They are being replaced, piece by piece, while many people are still preparing for jobs that are ending.

I saw this early, when I was young, before I had words for it. And today, with artificial intelligence, it is more clear than ever.

This is where I want to be careful, because the easy answer would be to say that everyone needs to start a business, open their own company, become the owner of something. That is not it. Most people will not start a business, and they do not need to. The point is different. The advantage no longer belongs to the person who spends more years in one job. It belongs to the person who can create real value, in any place, with the tools that already exist. The person who keeps learning. The person who adapts. The person who builds discipline instead of waiting for motivation. The person who protects their focus in a world made to steal it. This is true for employees as much as for everyone else, in any kind of work.

When your income depends only on a salary, your future is in the hands of decisions that you cannot control. But when someone builds skills that create value wherever they are, they start to get back part of that control. Not because they became a business owner. Because they became hard to replace, and able to create opportunities where before they only waited for them.

This is what I have been trying to pass on. Not a sure answer about which job to choose, because nobody has that answer anymore. But the understanding that the ground moves, and that the most stable thing is what a person becomes and what they are able to do.

The next years will not reward the people who wait for the world to change in their favor. They will reward the people who get ready to do well, no matter how the world changes.
